Martin has been a chartered surveyor since 1974, and qualified as a Fellow of Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS) in 1982. Until recently, he had spent his whole career with Drew Pearce a firm of chartered surveyors based in Cathedral Close in Exeter which was reputedly founded before 1748.
He was made a partner of the firm in 1979 and was the senior or managing partner for most of the period from 1985 until he became a consultant to the firm in 2016. He ended his association with Drew Pearce in December 2019 and started his own practice. It was recently said by one of his fellow surveyors in the city that he is now the longest practicing chartered surveyor in Exeter and surrounding areas.
Martin trained as a general practice surveyor which means that over the years, he has been involved in a very wide variety of work advising a range of clients from private individuals to government departments, local authorities and statutory undertaker as well as numerous local companies and individuals.
Martin has in the course of his career undertaken over 240 expert witness instructions on a range of issues including matrimonial valuations, negligence claims against other professionals and boundary and neighbour disputes many of which have been conducted on a single joint expert basis. He has appeared in court including the High Court to give evidence, on many occasions.
One of his main interests in recent years has been in residential leasehold property and was instrumental in developing a Residential Block Management Department at Drew Pearce. He has also held a number of court appointments as the manager of residential blocks.
Alongside this work Martin is well known regionally for his work in connection with the extension of residential leases, the enfranchisement of freeholds and advice on right to manage companies.
Martin is very happy to discuss with potential clients and their advisers, without obligation, the ways in which he can assist them with their particular issue.
